I have known Schan for half my life, since I was 18 years old. He was one of my best friends in the world. He was funny, kind, and absolutely brilliant. He had a big heart, and that heart belonged entirely to his beloved Emmy. Though I am deeply saddened to lose him, I take joy in knowing that he is with the love of his life once again and that they are flying high together. I'll never forget our trips all over the country, in all the big cities from Chicago to San Francisco to Atlanta, and his love of rare steaks and Moscow Mules. Until we meet again, my friend, farewell.

I met Schan like a lot of people did--via the internet. I believe we were both 16 when we met, and we were introduced by a mutual friend. We were in the same grade, so we got to support one another through 11th and 12th grade. Especially 12th grade, through the whole college application process! We spent hours talking on MSN Messenger, and I remember that we would send each other music and sometimes help each other with homework. We wound up at Missouri State together for a semester and we lived in the same building, but on different floors. We were both away from home for the first time, so we supported each other through that. We went to brunch on the weekends together and to lunch and dinner together almost every single day. We joined College Democrats together and we met quite a few Missouri state legislators that way. šŸ™‚ We also watched a TON of horror movies together that semester. We used to walk to Blockbuster at least once per week to rent more. Neither of us had a car in Springfield, so we also braved Springfield public transportation once or twice to go to the mall. We had so much fun together that semester. We lived on floors that didn't allow the opposite sex on the floor after midnight on weeknights, so I remember our RAs would start knocking on the doors to make sure we went back to our respective floors, where we then just got on MSN Messenger and talked for another hour or two. šŸ™‚He left MSU after one semester, so most of our contact after that was online, though we did get to hang out a few more times over the years. He came to my wedding and he came to my house in Indianapolis a couple of times. We talked several times per week. He was one of my very best friends in the world. He was so smart, so kind, and so hilarious. I could talk to him about anything, and I like to think that we were able to help each other through some really tough times. We especially loved to talk about politics, especially after he moved t

Schan was one of the kindest people I've known despite always modestly insisting that he was weird. He helped me through some very tough times in many ways. We talked a lot about how much fun we'll have when we meet in person one day. We were both really looking forward to it.He also taught me about something called ASMR years before it became big; told me it helped him feel peaceful and cope with Emmy's passing. He was very excited to learn that I enjoyed it as much as he did.I've been listening to it ever since, for almost 8 years now, and will be using his advice to try and cope the same way he once did.I hope he is finally at peace now, and reunited with the love of his life.
