MADISON - David Paul Moberg (Paul), 72, passed away on April 27 from liver cancer. Paul was born in Seattle, Washington on June 15, 1949. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota during his first year of life while his father, David O. Moberg, completed his PhD at the University of Minnesota. Paul graduated from Murray High School in St.Paul in 1967. His first year of college was spent at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, and then he transferred to Marquette University in Milwaukee where he completed his BA (1971) and MA (1973) degrees in Sociology.
Paul worked for several years at DePaul Rehabilitation Hospital, where he discovered his lifetime career in Evaluation Research and Applied Research in Substance Use Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment.
Paul decided to pursue a PhD at UW-Madison. During his PhD program he was a Student Trainee in the NIMH-funded Center for Evaluation in Research and Training. Paul met his wife, Silvia Jackson, in this center while she was beginning her PhD in the School of Social Work. In 1985, he finished his PhD in Sociology with a minor in social evaluation research through the School of Social Work.
Paul and Silvia were married on July 31, 1982. They have two sons. As a family, we enjoy downhill skiing, biking, boating, and walking our dog Marcus.
Paul worked in DHS on several prevention research projects. Subsequently he was hired as Associate Director of the Center for Health Policy and Program Evaluation (CHPPE) in 1986. Paul spent the next 20 years building up CHPPE, which then merged with the Population Health Institute in the School of Medicine and Public Health. He had a leadership role in both Institutes where he led research and made lifelong professional contributions with colleagues passionate about public health.
Paul led the Evaluation Research Group in the UWPHI as a Senior Scientist and Research Professor through 2011. He stepped down from a leadership role and retired, but continued to do a number of research projects through 2022.
Paul’s work has appeared in a number of journals including: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs; Medical Care; and Wisconsin Medical Journal.
Over the last several years, Paul volunteered his time locally as a board member at Horizon High School, an Alternative School for Students with Substance Use Disorder.
Paul was predeceased by his sister, Joyann Marie; his mother, Helen; grandparents, John and Marie Heitzman, and Fred and Anna Moberg; aunts, uncles, and a cousin. Paul is survived by his wife, Silvia Jackson; sons, Matthew and Jackson ; father, David O. Moberg; siblings, Lynette Janssen, Jonathan, and Philip, as well as his extended family and an abundance of friends. We will all miss him more than words can say.
A memorial service will be held at First Unitarian Society at 900 University Bay Drive, Madison, 53705, on Saturday May 7th at 11:00AM. A light lunch will follow service until 2:00PM. A private green burial will be held.
