SHIOCTON, WI – Nettie Gladys McGee, age 65, passed away, at home on the land that she loved, on Saturday, August 20, 2022. She was born in Appleton, WI on January 27, 1957, to parents, James and Phyllis (Burmeister) Duquette. Nettie graduated from Appleton West high school in 1975 and attended Harry S. Truman College in Chicago. She went on to do a variety of work before landing on activism as her calling. Her drive to activism took place in 2005 during the time that both of her sons were serving in Iraq. She found the importance in doing what was within her power. During her impressive and dedicated career, she was a devoted campaigner for Vered Meltzer, Mike McCabe, as well as Nate Wolff, among others. She supported the missions and politics of a favorite podcast: Unf*cking The Republic (UNFTR). Nettie was passionate about environmental justice and societal equality. She was a strong advocate for women’s health and Planned Parenthood. She participated in numerous protests, fighting for the rights of Native American people, tribes, and land; from which she developed a deep relationship and spiritual connection to Native culture. She had a love for gardening and a respect for nature. In community with the Art League in New London, she participated as a volunteer to create mural paintings. Although Nettie will be sadly missed by her family and friends, the lessons she taught and the fights she fought will continue to inspire. Nettie is survived by her husband of forty years, Romen McGee; sons, Mike McGee, and Martin (Kayleigh) McGee; granddaughters, Murphy and Maven; mother, Phyllis Duquette; brother, Jim Duquette; sisters, Brenda McCormick and Tina (Judy) Duquette; along with cousins, one niece, one nephew, other loving family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, James Duquette. A private service honoring the life of Nettie will be held at Natural Path Sanctuary in Verona, WI (naturalpathsanctuary.org). I haven't seen Nettie since high school but her presence was so powerful that there was no way to miss that she came to live out loud. She was a passionate force to be reckoned with and I admired her kindness, caring about others and her tenacity. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed." I send my condolences to the family and friends of Nettie. ❤️ A couple of years ago, she asked to be friends on Facebook and told me that we had gone to high school together. I believed her but honestly could not remember any classmate by the name of Nettie. After seeing her obituary, I realized that I knew her as Nanette! Then I could picture us sitting in an English class together, two separate rows but across from each other. She asked me if I had any fingernail polish remover and I told her that I didn't but if she slathered some nail polish on her fingernails and then wiped it off, the old polish would dissolve and come off. Nettie was skeptical but tried it anyway...and it worked. All this exchange while we were supposed to be listening to our English teacher! Wishing each of you a peaceful heart filled with memories of Nettie. ❤️

My husband and I met Nettie over the summer in July. We attended an OWR event in Wausau. She was there. She was a water protector. She was active with Save The Menominee River. We weee friends on Facebook. It was nice to meet her in person. Prayers for her family.🙏🏻🙏🏻
