Madison - Robert Anthony Carpenter, age 55, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 5. Robert was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on June 2, 1967 to David Carpenter and Linda (Simkins) Carpenter. He spent part of his childhood in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin prior to settling in Madison.

Robert graduated from Memorial High School and then took several courses at Madison Area Technical College. He was a talented artist, photographer and woodworker. Early in his career he was a well-respected waiter at some of Madison’s finest restaurants. The latter part of his career was spent as a wine merchandizer. Robert was fond of fine dining, birds and the flying squirrels that visited him on his porch.

Robert is survived by his dad, David, his brother Brad of Miami Beach, FL, sister Paige of Sun Prairie, nieces Hannah Carpenter of Los Angeles, CA, Laurel Carpenter of Port Orange, FL, and Lindsay Carpenter of Plantation, FL. Robert is also survived by uncles Jerry (Anita) Carpenter of Oshkosh, Thomas (Barbara) Carpenter of Appleton, and Robert Simkins of Amherst Junction and aunt Cheryl Carpenter of Appleton. He is also survived by many cousins and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Harris, his uncles Ralph Carpenter and Larry Ellis and his aunt Jean Ellis.

There may be a celebration of life planned in the future. In lieu of a funeral, hold your loved ones close, tip your wait staff well, and please enjoy your memories of Robert from happier times.

I met Robert when he was 14 and I was 13. While we knew a lot of the same people, we were never super close, just a friendly presence in one another's lives. Through the years we had so many fantastic conversations about music, food, art. Every time we ran into one another we had a big hug and a smile for one another. I'll miss seeing him around. I'll especially miss the warmth that radiated from him through his smile. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Bob was one of my best friends. He was an integral part of "our gang" in high school. I can't remember any occasion when all of us were having fun without Bob at the center of it. He was so fun so kind he was a great listener and had enormous amounts of talent. He had so much knowledge of music and such zest for life. He was always there to hug and care for any of his friends. Bob and I spent time together after high school as well but life got busy and we kinda lost touch. You have a special place in my heart. "Mocha Java" my friend 💕

I am sorry to hear about Bob. We were the dearest friends starting in 5th grade. I spent many days at Bob's house as a boy. We enjoyed playing outside and watching Saturday night live. It was a great time in life. I lost contact with Bob but often thought of him. I'm sure he thought about me too when seeing Steve Martin on TV. We had so much fun being silly youngsters. As a neighbor of Rob, I saw him on an almost daily basis. He was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I've ever met. He offered every time I saw him to help if I needed it. Always thinking of others. He will be greatly missed in our little community here at Sherman Terrace. Peg Fitzmaurice

I haven't seen Bob in a long time, but he was such a sweet, kind talented and interesting person. His presence on this Earth will be missed. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. My heart goes out to you.
