Ruth Lehr

Madison/Sun Prairie—Ruth Wendl Lehr, 87, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2022, at Oak Park Place. She was born on August 13, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to Henry and Florence (Boitz) Markus. Ruth graduated from Warren Township High School and went on to become a bookkeeper. She enjoyed gardening, but what made her happiest was helping others. Ruth was an active member in her church, attending Sun Prairie United Methodist for many years, where she helped with children’s programs, served many meals, ensured the coffee was always ready, stuffed bulletins, balanced the books, and was available for a variety of other jobs. Ruth wanted to help within her community as much as she could, volunteering for many years with Red Barn Thrift, Food Pantry, Luke House, local schools, and community meals. Ruth was a devoted mother and a proud grandmother. She was always extra attentive to the children in her life, ready to jump in and lend a hand. Her family members each hold many special memories of her helping with homework, leading 4-H clubs, balancing a tough checkbook, painting a house, playing hide-n-seek to entertain a little one, offering a special meal (or Chinese Buffet!), and folding laundry. Ruth thrived on helping with a project, whether for family, friends, or those she would never meet. Ruth is survived by many loving family members, including daughter, MaryAnn Willgrubs (Madison, WI), and son, James Lehr (McDonough, GA); their spouses, James Willgrubs and Janelle Seibold; and grandchildren, Harold Willgrubs, Isaac Willgrubs, Stone Lehr, and Electra Lehr. Per Ruth’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. Each family member and friend will remember and honor her privately. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sun Prairie food pantry or serve in your community as Ruth would have. A special thank you to the Oak Park Place staff for their care and activities (especially Bingo) and to the A1 residents for incorporating her into the community.
