Obituary
DEFOREST/EAGLE RIVER – Janet Lou Stanek, age 87, passed away surrounded by her children on Saturday, March 11, 2023 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Jan was born on the family farm in Plum Valley, WI on July 25, 1935 to Elmer "Dewey" and Hazel (Good) Peterson. Some of her most cherished memories are from growing up on the farm. She married the love of her life, Roland “Jeep” Stanek on September 19, 1953 at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Wonewoc, WI. They moved to Panama City, FL where Jeep was stationed in the Air Force. When they moved back home to Wisconsin, they lived in Madison for several years. In 1974, Jeep and Jan moved to DeForest, where they raised their three children. In her early years, Jan worked for American Family Insurance. She later went to work for Bollig Lathing Company and then worked at the Village of DeForest until her retirement. After her retirement, they moved to Eagle River, WI where they spent 25 years. She recently moved back to the DeForest area to be near her family. Jan enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing cards, knitting, and going to the casino, and above all, spending time with her family. She was an amazing cook, and loved to bake. She made the best sugar cookies in the world!
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Todd (Lezlie), Tari (Mike) Ringelstetter, and Traci (Bill Bull). She will also be missed by her grandchildren, Ashley, Michael, Kylie, and Alyson; step-grandchildren, Billy and Kaycee; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Ray Peterson. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Jan is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jeep; her two sisters, Shirley Bollig and Cleo Spring, brother Jay Peterson, brothers-in-law Linus Bollig and Bob Spring, sister-in-law Rita Peterson, and nephew Doug Bollig.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, March 20, 2023 at ST. OLAF CATHOLIC CHURCH, 623 Jefferson Street, DeForest. A visitation will be held from 10:00AM until time of service on Monday at the church. A celebration of life will also be held in Eagle River in the summer.
