Florence Potts

Madison – Florence (Marie) Potts passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2023. She was born in Monroe, WI, on September 5, 1939, to Michael and Florence McGuire. Marie attended Marquette University, after which she taught high school math in Milwaukee. She married her high school sweetheart, Kenton Potts, on July 14, 1962, and they moved to Madison in 1972.

Marie was a true Irish lass with her red hair, infectious laugh, and never-ending smile. Like her mother before her, Marie was a kind, gentle, and compassionate soul while simultaneously being tough as nails. She was someone you wanted in your corner for all things. Her love for her family and positive attitude in the face of adversity were cornerstones of who she was.

A long time and active member of Nakoma Golf Club, Marie loved to golf, and served as President of the Women’s Organization. Her true passion, however, was playing bridge. She belonged to several bridge groups and spent many hours playing with her many friends.

Marie is survived by her husband, Kenton Potts, and children Kathleen (Kyle) Vandercar, Laura (Matthew) Roethe, Robert (Lynn); grandchildren Blake Vandercar, Jack Vandercar, Megan Potts, Erin Potts, Miles Roethe. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings; James (Gloria) McGuire, John (Nancy) McGuire, Joseph (Shirley) McGuire, Kathryn (Nick) Elmquist, and other beloved family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Parish, 602 Everglade Dr., Madison. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow the service.
