Joanne Carol Toay, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at her home. She was born on June 21, 1951, in Monroe, WI, the daughter of Odell and Mavis (Helmeid) Thompson. Joanne graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1969. She was united in marriage to James Lee Toay, on August 21, 1971, at York Memorial Lutheran Church. Joanne worked in finance with years at American Exchange, Bank of Madison (M&I Bank) and Metavante. She then began her second career as a caregiver for Oak Park, Madison.
Joanne loved playing cards, reading and taking care of her grandchildren in their younger years. She loved spending time with all of her family and travelling to visit family in Texas. Since her retirement, Joanne continued to fill her time with caring for others.
She is survived by her daughter, Jessica (Brian) Gardner; grandchildren, Emily, B.J., Aaron, Rebecca, Kaitlyn and Marisha Gardner; great-granddaughter, Freya; sister, Karen Schrenk; brother, Dennis (Linda) Thompson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard (Mary) Toay, Julie Toay, Trace (Janene) Toay and Jean (Jim) Hermanson; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents; her granddaughter, Amanda; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Schrenk and Gary Toay.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
