Obituary

Madison – Stanley John Sheggeby, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 15, 2023, with his wife by his side. He was born on December 9, 1941, in Granite Falls, MN to parents Kenneth and Esther (Prestegard) Sheggeby.

Stan graduated high school in 1959. He then graduated from Concordia College, Morehead, MN in 1963. He went on to obtain his master’s degree from Western Michigan University in 1966-1967. During his summer breaks, Stan worked at casinos in Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Stan taught middle school, 7th and 8th grade, for 20 years in Fresno, California, and he continued his teaching throughout the years as a substitute teacher. He also worked with his brothers for a short time doing construction and insulation.

Stan met Romona Schmidt in Eau Claire, WI in 1981. They were united in marriage in 1985. Together they lived in Eau Claire where Stan attended Chippewa Valley Technical College until he got a job in Madison in 1989. He then worked for the City of Madison and most recently at the UW Help Desk in computer support, until his retirement at the age of 65. He enjoyed retirement and spent much time over the years gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers.

Stan is survived by his wife, Romona Sheggeby; siblings, Ardath Solsrud and Ray Sheggeby; sister-in-law, Irene (Rolf) Anderson; nieces and nephews, Corinne (John) Kohler, Rachael (Michael) Goodell, Gregory (Martha) Solsrud, Tatiana, Brian (Toni) Solsrud, Christine (Eric) Vasquez, Sarah (Andy) Terry, Jeri (Andy) Sylvester, and Chad Bertrang; great-nieces and great nephews, Ryan, Brooke, Nate, Anna, Grant, Dr. Kassandra (Dr. Max) Carter, Winston, Sofia, Aurora, Arabella, Makai, Maci, Cruz, Logan, Casey, Owen, Ethan, and Mildren; and special friend, Maria Garcia Solsrud.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alan.

After his master's, Stan taught at Malta, MT for his first year as a teacher, then did a telephone interview with Cooper Jr. High School in Fresno, California, and got hired and taught there for 13 years from the fall of 1968 to the spring of 1981. ----------------- I really appreciated having Mr. Sheggeby as my geometry teacher in 9th grade at Cooper! We loved him for taking a hands-off approach and allowing us gifted students to work independently at our own pace. My favorite memory is of one of the girls who was a cheerleader, going to the back of the room where he sat at his desk, physically taking him by the hand and dragging him to the front of the class to teach us how to do proofs in geometry! He taught us how to do it and we were satisfied. Of course, we would continually get up to go ask him questions, individually. He also allowed us to vote as a class on what we wanted to do with our special $500 Mentally Gifted Minors (MGM) fund for our class. We could either buy calculators with the money (that future students would be able to use) or spend the money on a visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Of course, we voted to go on a field trip to visit the JPL and we loved it. This was 1977 and the control room there at JPL listed "1989" as the year Voyager 2 would arrive at the planet Neptune.
