Obituary

Daniel “Dan” L. Johnston, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at Bedrock Healthcare in Beaver Dam, WI. He was born on April 23, 1942, to Gerald and Helen (Spandet) Johnston in Bloomington, IL. Dan married Sharon Sparr on June 13, 1964, in Farmer City, IL, 6 months after joining the Air Force for four years.

Dan received his Bachelor of Science Ceramic Engineering at the University of Illinois. He worked at the Department of Natural Resources for over 25 years in air pollution. He also worked as a minister at a Christian Church in DeLand, IL.

Dan enjoyed his pets, reading and sewing, even making all the grandkids learn how to sew. He was a fun person to be around, even was times were hard, he was always happy and helping people.

Dan is survived by his wife; grandchildren, Jennifer (Justin) Perttunen, Jaclyn VanDyk, Braden Reed; 6 great grandchildren; siblings, Joe Johnston, Sheryle Carpenter, Barb Brown, Linda Kefi, Meta Linn, David Johnston; son-in-law, Brady Reed and other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Christine Reed at the age of 53 years.

Oh my gosh, Sharon! I was just thinking about both of you the other day!! I am so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I have many fond memories of helping him in my sewing classes and when he came into Hans' Sewing Center! He was always joyful, eager to learn, and had wonderful things to say to everyone. Blessings to you and your family.

My best friend in high school and beyond. We had many good times together. We joined the Air Force together and stayed together through Basic Training, then the AF sent us our separate ways. Dan was a true friend.

A wonderful man and friend -- a mentor and very positive influence on my life. I'll always cherish memories of our expeditions to Bengal games, our cross country skiing ventures and our intellectual studies together -- and sharing of each others' families. You so enriched my life!
