Obituary

John W. "Jack" Leichtenberg, age 92, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at Covenant Oaks Memory Care. He was born on August 25, 1931, to John and Nona (Sutter) Leichtenberg in Madison, WI.

Jack attended Blessed Sacrament Grade School and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1949. He enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point where he lettered in football for two years. Jack enlisted in the United State Air Force in 1951 and was stationed in Texas and Goose Bay Labrador. After his discharge in 1955 he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, earning letters in football and golf. Jack graduated in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration. He worked as a Marketing Representative for Wisconsin Mutual Insurance and retired as Vice President of Marketing.

Jack married Joyce Sobye on July 27, 1957. He was an excellent athlete and enjoyed playing all sports, whether it was baseball, basketball, football, or golf. He was also honored with many awards for his athleticism and participation in many sports. Jack loved watching his children swim, taking family camping trips and many other excursions over the years. In retirement Jack was very honored to be a part of the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Jack is survived by his wife of over ​66 years, Joyce; children, Laura Leichtenberg, Julia Leichtenberg, Ann Leichtenberg; 5 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his sons, Michael, and Andrew Leichtenberg; sister, Gloria Baldwin; and brother, James Leichtenberg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 18, 2023, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison WI. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Military Honors will take place directly after the Mass. Jack was a friend of my father: Jim Crawmer. They grew up together as next-door neighborhood kids in Westmoreland. My dad remembered Jack well and would tell me stories from their childhood. I knew his parents: Nona & John. And his brother Jim and sister Gloria, since all us " Jim Crawmer Kids" grew up next door to Leichtenberg's. Beautiful people. my parents: Mary and Jim Crawmer both passed this year. We understand, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family. I recently met Jack while visiting a relative at Covenant Oaks since October. Jack and I had some great conversations during my many visits as I would always stop on my way past him. I was also fortunate to have met Joyce one afternoon. Jack introduced her as, "my lovely bride". He was always so kind and interested in who I was. I will miss him.
