Obituary
Dane Stoner Vermillion, age 57, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024, after a short battle with leukemia. He was born on November 22, 1966, in Milwaukee, WI, to David D. and Mary F. (Stoner) Vermillion. He attended University Lake School in Hartland, WI, and then earned a Bachelor’s degree from Colorado College. Dane worked for the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison for over 25 years and was a long-time employee at The Sailboat House.
Dane settled in DeForest after he met the love of his life, Rebekah “Becky” (Heinz) Vermillion. As a couple that loved the beach, whether it be vacationing in Florida or the British Virgin Islands, they were married on a beach in Dunedin, Florida, on October 24, 2008. By marrying Becky, Dane also gained two wonderful step-kids, Derek Storkson, and Taylor (Storkson) Pabón. They brought him great joy and eventually made him a grandpa. Dane also adored his three dogs.
Dane was an avid reader and music enthusiast and always had a new TV series or movie to recommend. After spending time abroad during college, he had a life-long appreciation for British music, TV, and movies.
He enjoyed riding his bicycle and especially touring with Becky on his motorcycle. Among his greatest passions was sailing. He was a member of the Mendota Yacht Club and served as Commodore in 2014. Dane sailed on many boats with numerous great sailors, but he found his sailing ‘family’ when he hopped on a J80 and joined the crew of Team Veloce.
Dane was always one of the most fun people in the room. He was ready to laugh at a joke, throw out a favorite movie quote, or share the most recent picture of his dogs. Dane had a quick smile and always had a twinkle in his eye when there was fun to be had. He was incredibly kind and laid-back, and his friendships meant the world to him. He will be so very missed by so many.
Dane is survived by his wife of 15 years, Becky; step-children Derek Storkson (Heather) and Taylor Pabón (Alek); step-grandchildren Cadence, Tenor, Arie and Thomas; mother, Mary Frances (Stoner) Vermillion; aunt, Cindy (Vermillion) Willis (Max); and cousin, David Willis (Hazel). Dane was preceded in death by his father, David Vermillion, and brother, Jeff Vermillion.
