Obituary

MADISON – Jack D. Jimieson, age 73, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Agrace Hospice, after a courageous battle with gastric cancer. Jack was born on October 27, 1950, in Madison, WI to John and Elaine (Knutson) Jimieson. He grew up in Madison attending LaFollette High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 with a degree in Mathematics. In college he met the love of his life, Nina Troia. They married on July 26, 1975, at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison.

Jack worked at the University in the Central Administrative Computing Department, aka “ADP/DoIT”, retiring after 35 years. A colleague once said “he was a genius and THE blackbelt programmer because he could see things before they became reality, in any tool (especially those he hadn’t yet learned)”. He enjoyed wood working, annual vacations in Door County, day trips to Devil’s Lake and sunsets over water or from his driveway while drinking beer, tennis, volleyball, swimming and windsurfing where he was known as the “Silver Surfer”. Jack (aka JahJimi) also loved music. He was an accomplished self taught musician on drums and guitar. He listened to and played many music genres and he could take a song, groove or rhythm and turn it into something new and interesting. He hosted countless jam sessions that were enjoyed by all. Jack’s zest for life while coming across as jaded was a marvel, mostly because he had a finely-honed BS detector. He didn’t sweat the small stuff and told it like it was. A good friend and fellow musician once said “knowing Jack was akin to traveling… you come away wiser and with some great stories to tell.”

Jack is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nina, nephew and niece, Eric (Kerri) Jimieson, and great nephew, Connor. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Rex.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at PRAIRIE ATHLETIC CLUB, 1010 N. Bird Street, Sun Prairie, from NOON until 3:00PM.

I met Jack over 40 years ago through a shared enthusiasm for volleyball and music. Jack, Nina, and mine friendships persisted through present day. Jack was smart, wise, thoughtful, had a great sense of humor and a loud infectious laugh. He was so full of life that I still can't fathom how it could ever run out. Jack, you left me with wonderful memories. Peace and comfort to Nina.

My family and I always enjoyed being with Jack. He was an interesting guy and always fun to be with. We met Jack and Nina in Door County several times when our annual vacations were at the same time in August. My daughter remembered playing golf with us and Jack's "Oscar Meyer" putter. I remember another time when my brother and I played golf with Jack at Peninsula, State Park in Door County. Jack said he hadn't played in years but he had a new driver that Nina bought him. Jack showed up at the driving range before our tee tome with his new driver, and it still had the plastic coating on it. On the first hole, Jack hit a booming drive, then pitched up on the green and sank a long put for birdie. I just remember him shouting "I'm done! I'm done! I don't need to play anymore!" I met and got to know Jack and Nina via the Prairie Athletic Club lap pool. Great people! Jack was always quick with a smile and a laugh. He shared lots of his stories of Madison and his love of music. We shared many laughs on the strange denizens of the PAC pool. RIP my friend. Nina - we can only hope you can get past the immediate pain and loss and live a life that Jack would insist upon. See 'ya at the pool!
