Obituary

Madison-

Dr. Edward Roger Hommel, 88, of Madison, WI., passed away surrounded by his family on May 4, 2024, in Denver, CO. He was born on November 5, 1935, and raised in Madison and attended Central High School where he met his wife, Mary. He began working in his father’s restaurant (The Top Hat) starting at age 11.

He attended Marquette University for premed and went on to graduate from Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1959. He and Mary were married for 65 years. They had three children: Kathleen, Jeffrey and Stacy.

Dr. Hommel practiced Podiatry for 39 years and was the first podiatrist to be on staff at St. Mary’s Hospital (the hospital he was born in). He served in the Wisconsin Air National Guard for 35 years. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol in Naples Florida.

Edward volunteered in the Medical Clinic in Jamaica, always considering it an honor and privilege to treat his patients. He also dedicated his time to the Benevolent Specialist Project/Free Clinic, active volunteer Boy Scout Leader, and Habitat for Humanity. Dr. Hommel worked with the UW track team and taught Family Practice doctors as residents. He faced unique challenges in his practice, such as caring for patients born without arms who relied on their feet for daily tasks.

Outside of his career, Edward was a man of many passions and hobbies. He enjoyed flying, traveling with his wife and family, hiking, camping, scuba diving, snow skiing, hunting, fishing, and had a deep interest in WWII history.

He will always be remembered as a kind and compassionate Husband, Father, and Grandfather. He was a friend to all who met him. Dr. Hommel's dedication to his profession, his service in the military, and his love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Hommel; children, Kathleen (Robert) Schnee, Jeffrey (Shelly) Hommel, Stacy (Scott) Hommel, grandchildren Ryan and Eric Hommel, Kevin and Megan Criley as well as extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his Father Carl Hommel, Mother Isabel Hommel, Brothers Carl Hommel, Jr., and Joseph Brady.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 5001 N. Sherman Avenue, with Father Gary Krahenbuhl officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Full Military Honors will follow Mass at the church. Burial will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital or to the charity of your choice.

Mary and family I am sorry for your loss. Dr. Hommel hired me for my first job when he was at 20 South Park Street, I enjoyed working with him and he taught me so much. You both treated me like family, I have thought of you both often...my deepest sympathy for the family

My thoughts are with the Hommel family. Dr. Hommel was a long time friend of my father's. I have great memories of Wisconsin River canoe trips with Ed, Kathy, Stacy and my Dad. Ed or Dad trying to outdo the other's sandbar cuisine. There was always a lot of laughter when Ed was around. Thinking of him makes me smile.
