Gregory Mueller

January 15, 1954 - March 11, 2025

Obituary

Gregory (Greg) Mueller, age 71, passed away peacefully at his residence on March 11, 2025, following a brief illness. He was born to parents Clifford and Grace Mae (Brattlie) Mueller on January 15, 1954, in Monroe, WI.

Greg graduated from Mount Horeb High School and went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Greg continued his education in insurance, obtaining his CIC and CRM designations.

Greg met his wife, Terri Vertein, while both were working for General Casualty Insurance Co. He was immediately smitten, with his first personal question being “how old are you,” to ensure they could date. Greg was charming and engaging, often surprising Terri with his romantic gestures such as when he proposed on Valentines Day 1980, between hockey periods, while they watched the USA Olympic Hockey Team defeat Czechoslovakia. They were married later that year on August 30, and enjoyed 44 years as husband and wife. Together, they were blessed with their son, Brett.

Greg began his career as a Commercial Lines Underwriter at QBE Insurance Co. (formerly General Casualty Insurance Co.), where he worked for over 39 years. In 1986, he transferred to the Indianapolis, IN office as the Commercial Lines Branch Underwriting Manager, and later returned to the Sun Prairie, WI office, where he eventually retired as an AVP Commercial Lines. Greg enjoyed learning about different types of commercial businesses, and meeting with agents and their clients. He took pride in approaching his agents with integrity and enjoyed the art of negotiating insurance pricing with them. One of his managers once said, “Greg Mueller. Without question, the best underwriter I have ever worked with”.

Greg loved music, history, trivia, and playing cards, as well as spending time with family and friends. He could easily impress you by telling you the song on the flip side of his 45’s collection, and one of his highlights in life was attending the Paul McCartney concert at the Kohl Center. He enjoyed learning as much as he could about history, often reading On this Day In History Today. And though he would never admit it, Greg also liked being outdoors, working with Terri and her family on their wooded land in Sauk County.

As an avid Wisconsin sports fan, Greg would always cheer on the UW Badgers football team, and of course, the Green Bay Packers. Greg was proud to be a three-time Fantasy Football Champion in the family league.

Greg is preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Palma Mueller; in-laws Orville and Beverly Vertein; and their beloved family dogs, most recently, Molly.

Greg is survived by his wife, Terri; son, Brett (April Hughes) Mueller; sister, Susan (Wayne) Huntington; brother, Steven (Diane) Mueller; sisters-in-law, Kim (Lee) Towey and Vicki (Gordon) Zerbel; brothers-in-law, Mark (LeeAnn) Vertein and Brian Vertein; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at New Life Church, 7564 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, WI, 53718. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Ménière’s Disease research at the House Institute Foundation, and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/PFFTribute/GregMueller.

The family would like to express their gratitude to SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital-Madison 5 West ICU staff, and Agrace Hospice Care for their compassionate care of Greg. Thank you to our family and friends for their support during his illness.

Greg was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Greg was a Professional Insurance Underwriter in the truest sense. He was also generous with his time and consistently was smiling and sharing a laugh. As an Agent, it was my pleasure working with Greg. I am sorry for your loss. -Scott Faris -Scott Faris
