David Lund

Obituary

DeForest, Wisconsin -- David B. Lund, age 94, passed away on September 17, 2025, at his home in DeForest.  He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 14, 1931, to parents Berger “Jerry” and Susan (Zuba) Lund.

David received his early education in Milwaukee and graduated from Pulaski High School in June of 1948.  He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for one year before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.  During his college years, he was a member of Acacia Fraternity and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity.  He also met his future wife, Betty, on the Madison campus in 1951.  Dave received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1953.  He then began his first year of law school at UW-Madison, but was interrupted to serve a two-year tour of duty in Korea for the U.S. Army.

Upon returning from Korea, he and Betty were married on June 9, 1956, and Dave returned to the UW-Madison campus to finish law school.  He received his Bachelor of Laws Degree and was admitted to the State Bar of Wisconsin in 1959.  The couple lived in Madison for a short time before moving to DeForest in 1961, where David started his law practice that lasted for more than 43 years.  He even went back to the UW-Madison to earn his Doctor of Law (Juris Doctor) degree in 1966.  He stayed in DeForest for the remainder of his life.

Over those years, he served as President of the DeForest Area School Board, Village Attorney, and President of the Lion’s Club, where he was a member since 1961.  Dave was a very active member of the Zor Shrine Nomads Motorcycle Corp and served as Captain twice.  He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, serving as an officer, a member of the choir, and in other capacities, as well.  He also was a member of the Rotary Club, where he served as Secretary and President.

David was an athletic person and loved participating in, as well as watching, sports.  He even wrestled for one year at the University of Wisconsin.  His hobbies varied throughout his life but included golfing, bowling, playing cards, boating, hunting, snowmobiling, riding his motorcycles, and traveling.  He did a lot of “living” in 94 ½ years!  He was an avid Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers football fan.  Not only did he attend the famous Packers vs. Cowboys “Ice Bowl” NFL Championship Game at Lambeau Field back on December 31, 1967—(the coldest game in NFL recorded history)—but he went on to believe that the Packers performance was forever dependent on whether he was watching the game.

Dave loved his family, as he and Betty welcomed their son Jon in 1965, followed soon after by their daughter Karen in 1966.  Their family of four took many trips together, traveling to far too many places to mention, creating memories to recall fondly to this day.  Dave also truly enjoyed his life as an attorney, helping to serve the many clients he met over the years.  He always had a joke or story to tell, and then he would usually follow it up with the comment, “Just a little humor, there…VERY little.”  He lived his life by the motto: “Take one day at a time, make today count, and keep smiling!”  We can only hope to follow in his wise words.

Dave is survived by:  his beloved wife Elizabeth “Betty” Lund; his two children Jon Lund (Mary Wright) and Karen (Scott) Thomas; his four grandchildren Alexander Thomas, Madison Thomas, Hazel Lund, and Leo Lund; his sister Susan (John) Gauerke, nephew Steve (Danette) Gauerke, niece Karin (Scott) Sorensen, and nephew Tom Lund.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Arthur Lund, and his niece Dana (Gauerke) Suleski.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at Christ Lutheran Church:  220 S. Main Street, DeForest, WI.  A visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service, including full military honors, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

I had David as a Sunday School teacher in the 70's. David would later teach me again as I started my real estate career. David was the shoulder I leaned on with every real estate deal for the first two years of my career. He was just what the doctor ordered and I had many a time to tell him what a god send he was for me. His son Jon was a classmate of mine who also happened to share the same birthday day and year. We were good friends and he was a good guy. I knew Karen as a friend more through church and Betty as a friend and teacher. My thoughts are with them as they deal with the loss of a husband and father, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you... Randy Alsmo

David and Betty were very special people and were so influential during my high school and college years. Thank you for being such a wonderful person! Even though the years have past they are in my thoughts.
