Obituary

Mary Candlewood Howley, 85, Madison, passed away peacefully at her sister Catherine’s home on January 26, 2026. Mary was born December 24, 1940 in Madison, WI to Elizabeth A. Tormey and Harold J. Howley. She was a graduate of East High School in Madison. In 1958, Mary bought her first Labrador retriever puppy with the condition that she join the Madison Retriever Club.

Mary and her Candlewood Kennel produced over 100 Field Champion Labradors and won a record 11 National Field Championships — 6 National opens (5 in a row) and 5 National Amateur opens. Thousands of families and hunters will remember her for the trainable, handsome, and healthy companions Candlewood produced. Her impact on the breed and field trials will endure for many decades to come.

Mary was my babysitter, my mom's confidant, a travel companion when I was only 5 years old, and a great friend. One always knew where they stood with Mary as she had no gray area! And she was without a doubt the true Dog Whisperer even though she never whispered:) I could never thank Mary enough for all of the great companions she provided to my family and myself! One of the truly great people in the world she will be greatly missed. My guess si that right now she is throwing a retrieving Dummy for Little in a better palce. Love you Mary!! Jay B

Our first family dog—beautiful black lab—came from Mary. That dog taught our children and us parents a great deal. We’re grateful to Mary’s dedication to the breed and her kindness toward us. 🐾❤️
