Lawrence "Larry" Luther, Jr.

Lawrence “Larry” Luther, age 86, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, following a short illness at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

Born in Plain, Wisconsin, Larry grew up with a deep appreciation for community and service. He graduated from Baraboo High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served proudly from 1958–1962 as a Military Policeman stationed in Alaska.

Upon returning home, Larry continued his commitment to public service by joining the Wisconsin State Patrol. He graduated with WSP Academy Class #12 in December 1963 and went on to build a distinguished career as a State Trooper. Larry took great pride in 29 years of dedicated service, and he cherished the countless stories and friendships formed along the way.

After retiring from the State Patrol, Larry remained active and engaged in his community. He drove a shuttle bus on the University of Wisconsin campus and later joined the UW–Madison DoIT Store, delivering IT parts across campus with the same reliability and good humor he brought to every chapter of his life.

Larry had a lifelong passion for photography, especially capturing meaningful family moments. His photos reflected his deep love for the people closest to him and his appreciation for everyday beauty. Larry also enjoyed sports, including watching Brewers baseball games, while listening to the broadcast on the radio. After every Packers game there was a call to Leah discussing the team’s performance. Through our grief we find joy that Larry is now able to join a euchre game with his family who passed before him.

He was preceded in death by his son, Eric Luther; his parents, George and Clara Luther; siblings Al Luther (Eunice), Br. Edward Luther, Helene John (Herman), Harold Luther (Jean), Viola Trzeciak, Marian Weitzel (Bill), Roy Luther (Lois); and brother‑in‑law Ron Rudersdorf.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jacqueline; his daughter Leah Folsom (Joe); and granddaughter Aubrey of Kansas City, Missouri. He is also survived by his sisters Irene Rudersdorf of Baraboo, Wisconsin, and Carol Luther of Janesville, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Kathy Siegle (Dennis) of Montello, WI, brother‑in‑law Walt Trzeciak of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews whom he held dear.

Services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1833 Regent Street, Madison, WI.

Visitation will be from 10:00–11:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with a light lunch served at the church following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wisconsin Troopers Benevolent Association, honoring Larry’s proud legacy of service and commitment.
