Van and I were next door neighbors from grade school through High School graduation. We played cowboys and Indians as well as army in his back yard. My folks and his along with our sisters gathered at his house to watch Neil Armstrong step out onto the Moon. It was in basement that we also gathered to the introduction of the Beatles to America on the Ed Sullivan Show. And Mercy he would his windows and ours when he learned toplay the drums. Van was always sweet, kind, friendly and caring. I know he will be missed by all who knew and love him. Prayers for comfort and strength. Psalm 34:18 " The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and cherishes those crushed in spirit"

I got to know Van as a frequent caller to Madison sports talk radio probably 20 or so years ago. We developed a casual relationship over time and ultimately, he MC'd a fund-raising event for the social service agency where I worked. He was a very kind man.

I remember Van from my days at Liquor Town and seeing him at Miller's in Verona. Always had a smile, a handshake and a kind word for everyone. While a personality on the radio, he was a personality in life. I will miss seeing him but will remember him with a smile.

We shared so much for so very long, and you were never less than a source of light and laughter. My heart breaks beneath the weight of losing you.
