Obituary For Anne Frances Martin

Anne Frances Martin (PhD), aged 86, of Chicago Illinois since 1966, formerly of Dublin Ireland, born May 9, 1937 to parents Francis and Patricia J D’Arcy (nee O’Keefe). Anne passed away peacefully February 21, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She is survived by her two sons Gavin and Shannon (nee Kennedy) and Terence (Darrell) and Mary (nee Keeton). Adoring grandmother to Kellie (Darrell and Mary). She is survived by family and friends in County Cork, County Westmeath and Dublin, Ireland (Fitzgerald, O’Keefe, MacDonald and D’Arcy). She is also survived by cousins (O’Herns), colleagues and friends throughout the USA.

Anne attended and finished her undergraduate degree at University College Dublin, Ireland. She received her PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, England. Anne had a long and fruitful career as a research scientist and professor at the University of Chicago, University of Cincinnati and University of Illinois at Chicago (whereupon she retired). She was a parish member and regularly attended Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Anne was a loving and involved mother to her sons, which included being a hockey and soccer mom. She loved art, music and literature and continued to take courses in these areas through her retirement. Anne traveled to and explored distant lands including Africa, India, Europe, Central and South America and the Arctic Circle.

An Irish Blessing:

“If roses grow in heaven, Lord please pick a bunch for me,

Place them in my mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile,

Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile.

Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day,

But there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away.”

Dear Mom, It been a long time since I have written to you. I miss you and love you very much. You have been the mostly loving caring mom I could ever have hoped for. You will be in my heart everyday until we can hug each other again. Your loving son Darrell

Auntie Anne let us use her flat in Dublin when we visited in 2008. I still remember the 3 or 4 pages of instructions about everything to know. When we stayed in a condo earlier in that trip, I would have loved to have such guidance on the differences between the US and Ireland. And I'll never forget how proud I felt when she asked me for advice on a lecture she was going to give to physical therapy students.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
