Obituary For Nancy Martha Spence

Nancy Martha Spence, age 87, of Deforest, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Nancy was born on October 30, 1936, in Gibbon, Minnesota.

Nancy married Ray on April 14, 1956. Nancy and Ray shared many interests. They enjoyed golfing, skiing, and watching Wisconsin sporting events. They did extensive travel in their retirement years which included hitting all 50 States.

Nancy was also very talented. There was nothing she couldn’t do when it came to crafts. She could knit, crochet, embroider and was very accomplished in quilting. Those skills were put to use as she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital and their local church!

Nancy is survived by two children, Sandy (Bruce) Peterson, Patty (Tim Bolhuis) Spence; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Theresa Spence; sister-in-law, Joan Wittman; five grandchildren, Heather (Jesse Roper) Freye, Ryan (Ashton) Freye, Lyndsey Drake, Alison Drake, Travis (Sami) Drake; and four great-grandchildren, Liberty Roper, Collins Freye, Bennett Freye, and Leland Schackelman.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Ray Spence; father and mother, Frank and Martha Mikkelson; father and mother-in-law, James and Marguerite Spence; sisters Jacqueline Muffleman and Virginia Miller; brother-in-law, Paul Miller; sister-in-law, Mary Spence; and brother-in-law, Wayne Wittman.

A private ceremony will be held for family at a later date.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at SSM Care Center and Hospice.

Ray and Nancy were a very special couple. The love and commitment to each other shined through them each time I visited with them. They are an amazing example of what a long, happy marriage should look like. I'll miss my chats with them! May they rest in peace, together again. God bless you as you mourn their loss. On behalf of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church.

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
