Tucson, AZ- Roy Olivares, age 82, passed away on August 7, 2018 at his home in Tucson, Arizona. He was born in Devine, Texas to Jesus “Jesse” and Angelina (Franco) Olivares. Roy’s family moved to Michigan in the 40s where they worked in the fields as migrant workers. In the late 40s, the family moved to Wisconsin and worked the fields around Endeavor and Portage. They stayed in Portage until 1954, when they moved to Antigo, Wisconsin.

Roy graduated from Antigo High School in 1955 and quickly moved back to Portage, where he worked for Moore’s World Foods and then later the Portage Hosiery. He was drafted into the Army in 1958 and spent his overseas time in Germany. He got out in 1960 and went into the reserves where he was recalled into the service again in October 1961, during the Berlin Wall Crisis, and got out in 1962.

He married Barbara Ziegler on July 1, 1961, and they both went to Ft. Bragg in North Carolina. He was released from service in 1962 and returned to Portage. He worked for the Hosiery until he got the job as produce manager with National Food. He was transferred to Madison, Wisconsin in 1970 and moved his family there in 1971. His family now consisted of 3 sons and his wife. He worked for National Foods, Delfarm and Kohl’s Foods during his grocery years. He retired at 62 and continued to work as a real estate agent and driver/trainer for Laidlaw, First Student, and Running, Inc. When his wife retired at the end of 2009, they became snowbirds, driving to Tucson, Arizona until October of 2014, when they moved there. Roy survived two heart attacks and was a member of the zipper club. He had to slow down the last few years because of his COPD and was on oxygen 24/7 and last year was diagnosed with Dementia. He was very much loved and will be missed by many.

Roy is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Paul (Jean), Rick (Cyndi) and Randy (Lori); four granddaughters, Melissa (Luke) Derra, and Samantha, Megan, and Devan Olivares; a great-grandson, Tommy Derra; siblngs, Olga (Jack) Worden, Odelia (Chuck) Malzahn, Ophilia Jones, and Robert (Jean) Olivares; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2018, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison. A graveside service will full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at SILVER LAKE CEMETERY, Portage.
